Some countries, including the UK, do not need a visa to enter the United States of America but you do have fill in the ESTA application, which is a visa waiver request.
The official link to do this is at ESTA Application, be aware that there are other websites where you can complete it but you will find at the end that it is a chargeable service.
It's not difficult to fill in if you know what is required beforehand. A good guide for this I found was at ESTA USA - The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide - Use this as a guide so you can gather all of the information you need before you start to complete the form. If you have to start searching during the process the form will time out and you have to start all over again.
Ref the bit about employment, current or previous. I had no idea what to put for that as the last company I worked for (Nortel Networks) went into administration in 2009 and now has no contact address/phone.
In the end I answered 'No' to the question about current or previous employer. The form went through ok.
Also, as I was going to be travelling for two weeks, I thought I would give Complete North America or Eagle Riders as the contact in the States.
I asked the advice of C.N.A. and they said to put the address where I would initially be staying which, for me, is my Sister in Law and her husbands house outside of Chicago.
I have found Complete North America really good to work with on the build up for this trip, they aren't cheap but when you consider what you get I'm feeling it's worth it.
